As the blockchain and NFT landscape evolve, new technologies continuously emerge to streamline user experiences and enhance functionality. One such innovation is Base, an Ethereum Layer-2 solution designed to alleviate the high transaction costs typically associated with the Ethereum network. This is particularly significant for VeeFriends Series 1 token holders and any other VeeCon 2024 attendees. By utilizing Base for VeeCon 2024 tickets this year, holders can benefit from significantly lower gas fees and faster transactions!

This guide will introduce you to Base, detailing how to effectively integrate the network into your wallet and bridge funds. Additionally, it provides step-by-step instructions for buying and selling VeeCon tickets hosted on Base, ensuring you can leverage all the advantages this Layer-2 solution offers.

Join us for a live Twitter Spaces session with a member of the Coinbase team on Friday, May 10th at 3 PM ET to learn more about VeeCon tickets on Base and its benefits. The session will be recorded for later access.

TLDR;

  • Introduction of Base: Base, a Layer-2 solution developed by Coinbase, is designed to operate alongside the Ethereum network, significantly reducing high transaction costs and enhancing transaction speeds.
  • VeeCon Ticketing on Base: For VeeCon 2024, tickets will be hosted on Base instead of the Ethereum mainnet. This integration is expected to lower transaction fees, speed up transactions, and make VeeCon tickets more accessible to a wider audience.
  • Setting Up Your Wallet for Base: Users can add Base to their wallets by visiting base.org or manually adding it.
  • Bridging Assets to Base: Essential for using Ethereum assets on Base, this process involves transferring assets from the Ethereum mainnet to Base, using tools like the official Base Bridge or MetaMask Portfolio, to ensure assets are usable on the Layer-2 network. You do not need to bridge assets in order to view and register your VeeCon 2024 ticket.

What is Base?

Base is a Layer-2 scaling solution by Coinbase designed to operate alongside the Ethereum network, addressing some of ETH mainnet’s limitations, such as high gas fees and slower transaction speeds. By processing transactions off the main Ethereum chain, Base provides faster and more cost-effective transactions while maintaining the security and integrity of the Ethereum network.

The Integration of Base with VeeCon Ticketing

For VeeCon 2024, efficiently managing the ticketing processes is paramount for a successful event for both the VeeCon team and the wonderful VeeCon 2024 attendees. In the previous two years, VeeCon tickets were hosted on the Ethereum mainnet. This year, Base will host VeeCon ticket NFTs, leveraging its Layer-2 capabilities to enhance the ticketing experience. This move not only ensures a smoother transaction process but also lowers transaction fees and makes the tickets more accessible to a broader audience due to the volume of users with wallets from Coinbase.

As a VeeCon Attendee, What’s Needed?

If you solely wish to use your ticket for VeeCon 2024 access, no action is required besides registering your ticket when available. However, if you intend to buy, sell, or transfer the NFT, please follow the detailed steps provided below for engaging on Base.

Setting Up Your Wallet for Base

The easiest way to add the Base network to your wallet is by visiting http://base.org and connecting your wallet. When you connect your wallet to the site, it will automatically prompt you to add the Base network to your wallet. If that does not work below are a few options for accessing the Base network.

Please note that setting up your wallet with Base on mobile will work, but VeeFriends highly recommends using a desktop for this process.

Using MetaMask with Base

To add Base as a custom network to MetaMask, follow these steps:

  1. Open MetaMask: Launch the MetaMask browser extension.
  2. Network Selection: Click on the network dropdown at the top of the extension.

3. Once on the Network Selection page you can search for Base or select it from the provided list of popular networks. Then click “Add Network.”

**If you are not prompted to add the Base network then you can proceed to steps 4 and 5 to add the network manually.

4. Select “Add a network manually.”

Enter Network Details

5. Save: Tap the “Save” button to add Base to your network list.

Using Coinbase Wallet with Base

Coinbase Wallet supports Base by default, simplifying the process:

  1. Open Coinbase Wallet: Launch the Coinbase Wallet browser extension and log in.
  2. Connect to an App: Use Coinbase Wallet to connect to an app.
  3. Network Selection: Click the network icon in the upper right-hand corner to open the network menu.
  4. Select Base: Choose Base from the list of available networks.

Your active network should now be switched to Base and ready for transactions.

How To Bridge Assets to Base

Bridging in cryptocurrencies refers to transferring assets such as ETH from one blockchain network, like Ethereum’s mainnet, to another, separate network, like Base. ETH on the mainnet network will not work on Base and vice versa. To use ETH on Base, you MUST BRIDGE; otherwise, your tokens will be inaccessible or ‘lost.’

This differs from sending cryptocurrencies within the same blockchain, where you simply transfer assets from one address to another without changing the network. Bridging is essential for utilizing assets across different blockchains, enabling users to engage with various decentralized applications and services not available on the original network.

Here are two popular methods to bridge assets to Base, each catering to different needs and preferences:

Option 1: Using the Official Base Bridge (Update planned for May 17th where all traffic will be rerouted to a different bridge portal)

The official Base bridge is a straightforward way to move assets between Ethereum and Base:

  1. Navigate to the Base Bridge Website at https://bridge.base.org/deposit: Make sure you’re on the official site and select the ‘Deposit’ option.
  2. Connect Your Wallet: Click ‘Connect wallet’ and follow the prompts to link your wallet to the bridge.
  3. Deposit Funds:
  • Select the asset to bridge (e.g., ETH) from the dropdown menu.
  • Enter the amount (e.g., 0.5 ETH).
  • Click ‘Deposit’ and confirm the transaction in your wallet, paying the necessary gas fee.

4. Completion: Once confirmed on the blockchain, the asset will appear in your Base chain balance.

Option 2: Using Metamask Portfolio

To bridge assets using MetaMask Portfolio:

  1. Connect your MetaMask wallet to portfolio.metamask.io.
  2. Click “Bridge” to initiate the process.
  3. Choose the source network from which you want to bridge your tokens (for example, Ethereum).
  4. Select Base as the destination network.
  5. Pick the token and specify the amount you wish to send (e.g., 0.01 ETH). Note that the amount received on the destination network will be slightly lower due to transaction fees.
  6. Opt for the recommended route or select a different quote by clicking “Choose a different quote.”
  7. Confirm your bridge transaction by selecting “Submit transaction.”
  8. Monitor your transfer with the “Bridging in progress” bar and view your assets on the new chain once the process is complete.

Mainnet: A primary and original blockchain network where transactions are recorded and maintained.

Layer-2: Secondary frameworks or protocols built on top of a primary blockchain (Layer-1 or mainnet) to enhance its scalability and transaction capacity. These solutions process transactions off the main blockchain and settle them later, aiming to increase speed and reduce costs without compromising the security of the main chain.

Ethereum: A decentralized, open-source blockchain platform that supports smart contracts, allowing users to automate transactions and agreements without intermediaries. It serves as a foundation for a wide range of decentralized applications and has its own native cryptocurrency, Ether.

Bridging: The process of transferring assets or data between different blockchain systems, or between different layers within the same blockchain. This enhances interoperability and fluidity across the blockchain ecosystem, facilitating the use of diverse platforms and the integration of their unique features.
